What Is Loy Krathong Festival

One of the most enjoyable times of year in Thailand is Loy Krathong. This fun celebration also called the Festival of Lights, with people realising candlelit offerings that float in bodies of water. In Phuket this is mainly around the beaches in the tourist areas such as Patong.

A number of the local hotels will also put on exciting firework shows, which can be seen from various parts of the island, specifically around the tourist zones.

When Is The Festival Held

This year Loy Krathong will be held on Monday 27th of November.

The festival commences when the 12th full moon falls on the lundar calendar every year. The date will change every year, but typically at the end it is at the end of rainy season, or in November.

A Brief History

Loy Krathong is rumoured to be around 800 years old and originated in Sukhothai, north of Bangkok. It’s not considered a religious ceremoney, but some Thai people believe it pays homage to Phra Mae Khongkha, the water goddess.

The name Loy Krathong translates to Floating Basket, and the festival is celebrated by placing a floating floral basket into the sea. This offering to Phra Mae Khongkha is placed into a body of water with a request for forgiveness for using excess water or polluting water ways. You’ll often see small amounts of money put in the Krathongs, usually coins.

What Can You Expect

The main events during Loy Krathong are the following:

  • Releasing Krathongs into the sea or other body of water
  • Releasing Lanterns into the sky
  • Firework Shows
  • Street food and vendors
  • Traditional Thai clothing shows
